Park Yeo-Ri

Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to grasp what healing Sakhalin Korean elderly women experienced with qi gong training who have been regarded as peripheral existence and to study what relationship the experience of healing had with the identity of study participants. For this, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews against total 5 elderly women who participated in qi gong training program of welfare center belonging to Sakhalin Koreans residence in Ansan city for about 3 months from October to December, 2013. In this paper, the effect of qi gong training will be explained focusing on the experience of healing the elders recognize by themselves rather than the measurement of quantitative effect of qi gong training. The healing effect of qi gong training which reveals through this study is as follows. First, study participants recognize their body became "straight". It includes not only an effect that their curved body becomes straight through qi gong but also the effect that they have a pride on their figure as escaping from their past figure which was lethargic. Second, they reinterpret the pain and become blunt to it. Third, they escape from the negative elder image. Study participants have an identity of elder who takes care of oneself by redefining the category of elder through the experience of qi gong training and reflecting themselves to it. This paper argues that qi gong not only brings the healing effect in the medical aspect, but also enables elders to recognize themselves newly as a self-leading main agent through the healing experience.
